Chrissy Mayo, Hypnotic Owner and Stylist

Hypnotic founder Chrissy Mayo loves to highlight the stylists at her salon, but this time we are turning the spotlight on her!

You started professionally doing hair in high school? How is that possible?

I was enrolled in beauty school at age 14, while I was in high school, so by the time I was 17 I was licensed and working full-time in a salon. The Thomas Edison High of Technology is such an amazing program (shout out to Ms. Quan!), and I was enrolled in the cosmetology academy which was ideal for me. I started the program because I always loved hair, and you would alway find me in full hair and makeup as a teen — even for my wrestling matches! I also knew the program would get me out of class and into the workplace, interacting with people. And while learning and working in the salon in high school, I found my life’s passion and direction.

Tell us about your early love of hair.

I actually gave my sister Katie highlights when I was in high school and Katie was just eight years old. My mom told me not to, but as soon as she left the house I just had to try it. When my mom returned home she was initially angry but then she stopped and looked at Katie’s hair and realized that the highlights were really good. And from that day on I was in charge of all hairstyling for my family, my mom, my sister, everyone. And then of course Katie fell in love with hairstyling, too.

So you were a licensed hair stylist at 17 and then you became a salon owner before most people are working full time or out of school? How old were you when you opened your first salon?

I purchased my first salon in Olney at age 21. I blocked out all the noise about my age and experience and just went for it! I’m a decision maker, so when I make my mind up I just put everything I have into it, 120 percent. I couldn’t have done it without my husband Jimmy Mayo who is a contractor. He could build what everything I needed, take care of maintenance and operations, and I could stay focused on the salon, staff, supplies and most of all, our clients. We were at that location for three years and then we moved here to the main corner in Olney and we have been here for six years. It’s been incredible to see everything open up and grow.

Although you are the owner and co-manager, you still see customers full-time. How do you do it?

I am behind the chair six days a week. It’s why I love coming to work and why I love what I do.  Interacting with my clients is the best. I can look at my book when I walk in and just know I will have a good day. I love hearing everyone’s stories, becoming friends and talking throughout. I love the energy!  Doing hair keeps me going on and gets me out of bed when I am struggling.

What sets you and Hypnotic apart from other salons?

We are always trying to stay ahead of the competition and on the cutting edge of hair techniques. But it is also essential to me that while we provide the highest quality hair care, we keep the prices competitive for our clients.  One of the most original things I have done, and what I am most proud of, is when this spring I hired Redken Education staff in New York to come down to Hypnotic and provide the color certification classes on-site in Olney. Read the full story here.

What emerging hair trends are you most excited to share with clients?

I love how the science of hair color and treatments are becoming more green and using less ammonia. It is exciting that now we can create more lasting and vibrant colors in hair — the new colors do not look washed out. The products we have access to and use at Hypnotic are just phenomenal quality — they are less damaging but are staying longer in the hair, keeping clients happier longer with the results. Balayage keeps evolving and improving to showcase regrowth as an advantage.

You have achieved so much…what is your next goal?

Keeping up with trends and always having the best stylists at Hypnotic!

Redken Education Comes to Hypnotic by Chrissy Mayo

One of the most original things I have done since founding Hypnotic Salon, and what I am most proud of, is when this spring I hired Redken Education staff to come down to Hypnotic Olney and provide the color certification classes that are only available in New York. We were one of the only salons to do this, ever. We shut down the salon for two days and brought in all the meals. We got everyone trained!

The Hypnotic stylists received that top-level education without having to travel — we brought it to them. This was invaluable for the stylists’ careers, to learn the chemistry involved in hair color and treatments, the trends, the fixes. Color technology is always changing, so it’s essential to learn the science and systems of the new methods.

Book your next appointment and see the new techniques for yourself!

Cara Henning: Hairstylist and Salon Manager Extraordinaire!

We are proud to highlight as our Featured Hypnotic Stylist the Hypnotic Olney Salon Manager and Hairstylist, Cara Henning!

This cut and color ninja is a miracle worker! In addition to keeping the Hypnotic Olney salon running like clockwork, she is a busy mom of three children all under the age of five. Cara has been changing her clients’ lives through amazing hair since 2004, and is known for tackling any hair or administrative challenge presented to her. Read on for her inspiring story and insight on new hair trends for 2017.

What inspired you to become a hair stylist?
When I was younger I loved playing with my stepsister’s hair. I would put it in twists, curl it, flat iron it for her — anything she wanted. When I got older it just made sense. I was an honors student, destined for anything, but my calling was hair. Doing what you love is what really matters!

Tell us about the transition to management.
When I was presented with the opportunity to manage and work full-time at Hypnotic I was ecstatic. I have a background in accounting as well as my passion for hair so I jumped at it! Being able to do hair and make sure the salon runs smoothly has been great. The staff is amazing and has welcomed me with open arms.

Describe your best day since becoming the Hypnotic Salon and Spa manager in Olney?

One day in October in particular I received feedback from numerous people throughout the day, telling me that they really appreciated everything I’ve been doing and they were so glad I was there. I did nothing in particular that day, it was very random, but it really made me feel like I had found a forever home.

What do you love about Hypnotic?

What is there not to love about Hypnotic? What owner Chrissy Mayo has established is amazing. I joined the Hypnotic team because I felt like Chrissy really cared about her staff and that she worked tirelessly towards helping people grow. She has pointed me in the right direction when it comes to building my book and managing skills. We make an amazing team.

I also love the education that is brought in for us. Without it we wouldn’t learn new trends or faster techniques. Ongoing education is so important in the stylist field. For instance, I cannot wait to become Redken certified which is a major plus provided to the Hypnotic team.

What salon or style trends are you most excited about for 2017?
For women’s hair color I’m really into balayage these days. It’s fun to actually be able to paint onto the hair and strategically place highlights exactly where the client will look her absolute best. I love learning new things and we have some awesome new classes coming up in 2017 so we can keep all Hypnotic clients looking incredible.

Best Hair Salons in Montgomery County

Few things can help one’s self esteem more than a completely rocking haircut and fresh color.

Having a bad day? Week? Month? Get thee to a salon.

I have been going to Hypnotic Salon and Spas‘ two locations in Olney and Damascus for the past five years. Salon founder and owner Chrissy Mayo is my go-to stylist for women’s hair care services, primarily cut and color, but I have had the pleasure of working with several other members of the Hypnotic team as well.

Below you can see me and Chrissy on a day that I arrived for a blowout after letting my hair air-dry on its own, six weeks after any hair cut or color services. Chrissy’s skill is such that in order to accommodate my hectic schedule and budget, she has created a custom highlight blend recipe that allows my natural color to grow in without obvious roots. She also provides such quality cuts and product recommendations that I am able to maintain my cut’s shape and hair health, and go for two months between trims.

You can be matched with a Hypnotic hair stylist who likewise specializes in your look and needs. Whether you have curly hair, a precise short cut, pixie, bob, extensions, perms, one step color, various highlight processes or keratin straightening, you will find the stylist best for you. Men and children can receive hair care services, too — my own kids beg to go to Hypnotic for the luxe head massage and “magazine worthy!” (Eve’s opinion) hair cuts.

Hypnotic esthetician Margaret Wenzlaff is a whiz with facial waxing, taking my eyebrows from a weird 1999-ish look to a younger-looking and more 2016 shape. (And of course, getting rid of any bizarre hair growths on my face that we shall not be named.) Her body waxing is also amazing for taking care of those larger hair removal tasks that, much like a great hair treatment on top of your head, can completely change your outlook and self esteem, as well as save you time in the shower. And as I write about often here on the blog, I am in love with massage and have had some incredible massages at Hypnotic from massage therapist Deborah Balenson.

On my last visit to Hypnotic Damascus I had the pleasure of getting to know stylist Cortny Seaton. Cortny is a genius with women’s short hair cuts, bobs, pixies, blonding, baliage, dramatic colors, color correction and hair reinventions. She is obsessed with new hair trends and is a social media star, sharing her beautiful work on her clients at @SoMuchHairSoLittleTime on Instagram (a must-follow!). She is self-professed Redken fangirl, is often tagged by Redken for her for traditional and cutting edge color and cuts and is excited to become Redken Color Certified this year.

Cortny also loves counseling her clients on the products and treatments that can transform their hair. She is a believer in the Olaplex hair treatment to permanently rebuild damaged disulphide bonds in hair that have been broken in due to chemical processes. She says that Olaplex allows her to help her clients rebuild and heal damaged hair, and allows clients to try new things with bleaching and color that used to not be possible.

So can you tell I highly recommend Hypnotic? Here’s the contact info for booking your own ticket to an instant better day, week and month!

Hypnotic Opens Second Location in Damascus

Hypnotic Salon in Damascus is Open and Fabulous

My favorite local salon, Hypnotic Salon in Olney, has expanded with a second Upper County location, Hypnotic Salon Damascus

Owner Chrissy Mayo not only cuts and highlights hair with extraordinary artistry and on-point style, she is also an amazing entrepreneur. In order to serve more clients with her and her team of stylists’ mad skills, she has opened a new location on Main Street in Damascus, right near the Jimmy Cone.

I have never been happier with my hair since I started going to Hypnotic. I have been served by three hair stylists there, three massage therapists, nail and eyebrow and facial pros, and everyone has been excellent.

Chrissy is now my go-to hair stylist woman, and her hair mastery is like nothing I have before experienced. She understands my goals of looking classic but fashionable, current without being too punk rock, and above all, to look my prettiest and personal best. She is also the sweetest woman. Every moment I am in her chair is a relaxing vacation from the stresses of life.

I love watching the styles that are created around me when I visit Hypnotic, too. Damascus salon manager Katie Westbrook is a whiz with the youthful, edgy, runways styles. From extensions to VOGUE cuts to eye-popping color, she is always working magic for her clients of all ages. Chrissy, Katie and their team of top-notch stylists are taking new clients and appointments at the Damascus location. You have to visit them.
