Hypnotic founder Chrissy Mayo loves to highlight the stylists at her salon, but this time we are turning the spotlight on her!
You started professionally doing hair in high school? How is that possible?
I was enrolled in beauty school at age 14, while I was in high school, so by the time I was 17 I was licensed and working full-time in a salon. The Thomas Edison High of Technology is such an amazing program (shout out to Ms. Quan!), and I was enrolled in the cosmetology academy which was ideal for me. I started the program because I always loved hair, and you would alway find me in full hair and makeup as a teen — even for my wrestling matches! I also knew the program would get me out of class and into the workplace, interacting with people. And while learning and working in the salon in high school, I found my life’s passion and direction.
Tell us about your early love of hair.
I actually gave my sister Katie highlights when I was in high school and Katie was just eight years old. My mom told me not to, but as soon as she left the house I just had to try it. When my mom returned home she was initially angry but then she stopped and looked at Katie’s hair and realized that the highlights were really good. And from that day on I was in charge of all hairstyling for my family, my mom, my sister, everyone. And then of course Katie fell in love with hairstyling, too.
So you were a licensed hair stylist at 17 and then you became a salon owner before most people are working full time or out of school? How old were you when you opened your first salon?
I purchased my first salon in Olney at age 21. I blocked out all the noise about my age and experience and just went for it! I’m a decision maker, so when I make my mind up I just put everything I have into it, 120 percent. I couldn’t have done it without my husband Jimmy Mayo who is a contractor. He could build what everything I needed, take care of maintenance and operations, and I could stay focused on the salon, staff, supplies and most of all, our clients. We were at that location for three years and then we moved here to the main corner in Olney and we have been here for six years. It’s been incredible to see everything open up and grow.
Although you are the owner and co-manager, you still see customers full-time. How do you do it?
I am behind the chair six days a week. It’s why I love coming to work and why I love what I do. Interacting with my clients is the best. I can look at my book when I walk in and just know I will have a good day. I love hearing everyone’s stories, becoming friends and talking throughout. I love the energy! Doing hair keeps me going on and gets me out of bed when I am struggling.
What sets you and Hypnotic apart from other salons?
We are always trying to stay ahead of the competition and on the cutting edge of hair techniques. But it is also essential to me that while we provide the highest quality hair care, we keep the prices competitive for our clients. One of the most original things I have done, and what I am most proud of, is when this spring I hired Redken Education staff in New York to come down to Hypnotic and provide the color certification classes on-site in Olney. What emerging hair trends are you most excited to share with clients?
I love how the science of hair color and treatments are becoming more green and using less ammonia. It is exciting that now we can create more lasting and vibrant colors in hair — the new colors do not look washed out. The products we have access to and use at Hypnotic are just phenomenal quality — they are less damaging but are staying longer in the hair, keeping clients happier longer with the results. Balayage keeps evolving and improving to showcase regrowth as an advantage.
You have achieved so much…what is your next goal?
Keeping up with trends and always having the best stylists at Hypnotic!
